English Corner Video 5 of 5

I had the kids do a project in our English Corner. It will take several weeks to complete the project. I had each team of two choose a country in the world that they wanted to learn about. I then gave them the Wikipedia information about each country. Each packet of information is like a book actually. This week, they had to introduce their country. They were suppose to make it a report to a class. In future classes, they will do conversations between two friends, interviews of a travel reporter and a native of the country, and the last one will be a debate format. They really seem to like this. They are learning culture and geography, while learning to speak English. I am posting five videos and will tell you why I am posting the videos. Some reports are very good. Some need work. I hope you enjoy watching them.

I am showing this video for two reasons. The first reason is that it is very funny to me. You will see why. The one boy is very shy. But, the second reason is because of the talent the shy boy has. As shy as he is, and as poor as his English is in class, he has a remarkable memory (I think). He tells us facts that he has memorized. None of the other students did what he does with his report. He did write a few notes on his hand. But, he seldom looks at it. He is reciting the facts from his memory. I see much potential in this kid. I hope to encourage him more and make him a great speaker of English. Yes, he is a class clown. But, he is so much more too.

I am showing this video because it shows the difficulty that most of the kids have. The small boy is dressed so he can go dance Samba and Latin dance later in the day. He is very good at dancing.

This first video is the best of the best. And, they decided to do a conversation, instead of a report. It is funny and entertaining.

English Corner Pictures

We developed an English Corner at our school. Brian and I are teaching only 15 students at a time. I teach 3 sessions and Brian teaches two. We do this at lunch time. We do not get paid extra for the time we use for the English Corner. We do it because we know there are many students that want to learn English better. So, we volunteer our time. And, the kids sacrifice their lunch break from all day of classes to attend. So, it is a labor of love of English and learning that drives all of us.

I found a vacant office in the building. We cleared it out and made it into a classroom. It is very small. We can only get about 15 students into the room at one time. So many more students want to attend. But, we do not have any more space. Maybe next term, we can have a bigger room.

I had my students select their favorite English word and make a poster to decorate the walls. And, on another wall, Brian and I are taking photos of our students and putting them up for the kids to see.

The English Corner has been a great success. It does make the day much longer since we do not get a lunch break. But, if the kids are willing to sacrifice their break time, I surely can. They go to school from 12-13 hours a day. I only have to teach 4-6 hours a day. So, I am not going to complain about teaching them during my break.

Dinner Party

A friend and coworker came to town from Beijing. She is the one in the middle of Brain and I. Her name is Tracy. I like to cook western food for my Chinese friends. So, I have a dinner party. I cooked two separate main courses. I fixed tacos. And, I fixed a Beef Pot Roast in the slow cooker. This way, if they did not like one, they could eat the other. Well, I showed my Chinese friends how to make a Mexican taco. I then went into the kitchen to finish some things. When I came back, my Chinese friends was putting the Beef Pot Roast, veggies, and the taco fixing all together on the tortilla shells. I tried to explain again what they should have done. But, they did not care. They said it was good. They all liked the food very much. We have a wonderful time together.

Funny thing about Chinese dinner parties. If they are at someone’s home, it only lasts about an hour. Once you are finished eating, people leave. If you are at a restaurant, you can sit there for hours. Just a Chinese culture thing. TIC.
